SAIC, short for Scientific Applications International Corporation, is a scientific, engineering, and technology applications company that uses its deep knowledge to solve problems of vital importance to the nation and the world, in national security, energy and the environment, critical infrastructure, and health.
The company ranks as one of the nation's largest defense contractors. SAIC has 41,000 employees that serve customers in the U.S. Department of Defense, the intelligence community, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, other U.S. Government civil agencies and selected commercial markets.
SAIC’s work ranges from battlefield biometrics to cutting-edge sensing devices to electronically linking the armed forces on the battlefield. SAIC also designs and develops high-power microwave systems, which could be used to stop enemy vehicles or disrupt enemy command, control and communications.
As a leading provider of engineering and technical support for operational test and evaluation of Air Force systems, SAIC is helping Airmen integrate the results of ongoing experimentation, testing, training and simulation.
There are about 16,000 SAIC employees in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area, representing the company's largest concentration of staff. SAIC is also one of the largest private employers in Northern Virginia.
In fiscal 2012, SAIC reported revenues of $10.6 billion and net income of $59 million. The company's backlog of signed business orders at the end of fiscal year 2012 was $18.9 billion, of which $5.5 billion was funded.
The company plans to split into two separate publicly-traded companies in 2013. One company will focus on government technical services and IT. The other will focus on science and technology services for national security, engineering and health
In December, SAIC said it would cut 700 jobs with half coming from the DC area.
Science Applications International was founded by Dr. J. Robert Beyster and a small group of scientists in La Jolla, CA in 1969. The company's first solid business base was established with the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) in 1970, performing sophisticated nuclear weapons effects calculations. This initial work grew to include other areas of weapons effects such as nuclear blast, simulation, and underground test instrumentation and measurements.
The company went public in 2006.
SAIC moved its headquarters from San Diego to Virginia on October 2009 to be closer to the federal government and defense agencies.
