Member-owned credit union
Navy Federal is the world's largest credit union serving the armed forces with over 4.3 million members. Originally founded to serve the Navy and its families, the Credit Union has expanded to serve all members of the Armed Forces including the Army, Air Force and Marines, Coast Guard and all Department of Defense civilian employees.
Since 1933, Navy Federal has grown from seven members to over 4.3 million members by offering checking and savings accounts, mortgages, insurance and credit cards. Navy Federal Credit Union has 229 branches and 478 ATMs worldwide with over $53 billion in assets.
Navy Federal Financial Group, a subsidiary of Navy Federal, offers an array of non- deposit products and services that complement the products and services provided through Navy Federal. These products and services include, investments, life insurance, financial planning, trust and estate planning, in addition to auto/homeowners/renters insurance and discount programs.
The company has been named one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For by Fortune magazine for the second straight year.
Navy Federal Credit Union announced it will expand its corporate operations in Pensacola, FL bringing new building construction and 1,500 new jobs to the region. Construction is planned to start in late 2013.
In 1933, during the Great Depression, seven
civilian Navy personnel formed a self-help club. Each pledged
$10-two weeks' wages-into a savings pool so that funds would
be available for emergency loans.
Savings clubs, like this one, became credit
unions. Formed during rough financial times, the benefits of
these organizations remained when good times returned. As democratic
cooperatives, they serve only the interest of their members,
not stockholders or presidents.
From those original seven members to over 4.3 million members today - Navy Federal is now the largest credit union in the world.
In October 2010, Navy FCU merged with USA Federal Credit Union in San Diego.
