Census Hiring 1.4 Million Temporary Workers

Posted on January 22, 2009

WASHINGTON, DC - The U.S. Census Dept. is hiring over 1.4 million temporary workers over the next year to gather and process data for the 2010 Census.

Over 500 local offices are being set up around the country to begin the task of getting an accurate count of the nation's population. The results help determine local representation in government, as well as how federal funds are spent in your own community on vital projects like roads, parks, housing, schools, and public safety.

Thousands of census takers are needed to update address lists and conduct interviews with local residents. Most positions require a valid driver's license and use of a vehicle. However, public transportation may be authorized in certain areas.

Information about jobs and to apply can be found at the 2010 Census website.

Jobs pay from $8.00-$18.50 hour and more for supervisory positions. Pay varies by region.

Hours are usually flexible and paid training is provided.

All job seekers will be required to take a test.

The test is a multiple-choice test of basic skills. These basic skills include reading, following written instructions, basic arithmetic, and map reading. Applicants may retake the test to improve their score and only the highest score will be used for placement. In order to prepare potential applicants, practice tests are available at the Census 2010 JOBS Website or the JOBS Hotline number at 1-866-861-2010.
