Blackboard is a leading provider of e-Education enterprise software applications and services used primarily in colleges and universities.  

The various software applications from Blackboard are delivered in six product lines: Blackboard Learn, Blackboard Transact, Blackboard Connect, Blackboard Mobile, Blackboard Collaborate, and Blackboard Analytics. These products are primarily licensed on a renewable basis, typically for annual terms.

The company also offers application hosting for clients who prefer to outsource the management of their Blackboard Learn systems, and the Blackboard Student Services offering includes student lifecycle management and IT support services. In addition, the company offers a variety of professional services, including strategic consulting, project management, custom application development and training.

Blackboard has millions of users of its software applications at more than 5,000 institutions in over 60 countries worldwide. Clients include primary and secondary schools, higher education, corporation and government markets as well as textbook publishers and student-focused merchants. The company has grown from approximately 26 licenses of one software application in 1998 to more than 12,700 licenses of its software applications as of December 31, 2010.

Blackboard has headquarters in Washington, DC with 21 locations in Boston, Phoenix, Vancouver, Amsterdam, Australia, China and Japan. The company has 8 data center locations.

In 2011, Providence Equity Partners acquired Blackboard for $45 per share or $1.64 billion. It is no longer publicly traded.

In 2010, Blackboard reported revenues of $447.3 million, and net income of $16.6 million.

The company was founded in 1997 and went public in 2004.

Benefits

Medical
Blackboard provides two medical plans: Point of Service (POS) option that allows for in and out of network coverage and a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) as a cost-savings alternative with in-network coverage only (if available in your geographic area). Both plans offer comprehensive care including hospitalizations, prescription drugs, vision, and routine and well-child care visits.
Dental
Blackboard's dental plan is a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) that allows for in and out of network coverage. This plan provides coverage for preventive, basic, major and orthodontia services.
Short-term Disability
If you become partially or totally disabled as a result of injury, sickness or pregnancy, you may be eligible for short-term disability leave. Blackboard's STD benefit will pay 60% of your base salary while you're on leave.
Long-term Disability
If your disability extends beyond 12 weeks, you may be eligible for long-term disability leave. Blackboard's LTD benefit will pay 60% of your base salary.  You can also purchase additional coverage at special rates to help offset the difference between your long-term disability pay and your base salary while you are on long-term disability.
Life and AD&D
Blackboard provides you with basic life and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance of $50,000.  You can also purchase supplemental insurance for you as well as coverage for your family.
401(k) Plan
Blackboard's 401(k) Plan allows you to defer between 1-60% of your compensation into a variety of mutual funds. Your contributions are made via pretax payroll deductions. When you participate in the Plan, you will be eligible for a discretionary company match.
529 College Fund Savings Program
You can start putting away money now for your child's education through payroll deductions. The money plus interest are tax free when you are ready to use it.
Stock Options
Staff may be eligible to receive stock option grants based on both the company's and the employee's individual performance each year.
Paid Time Off (PTO)
As a full-time employee, you'll be eligible for up to 15 paid time off days per calendar year to use for vacation, sick leave, or any other reason you choose. Once you've been with the company for three years, you'll be eligible for 20 days per calendar year.
Holidays
Blackboard observes eight holidays per year. In addition to these eight holidays, you are granted three floating holidays to use whenever you choose.

New Parents Leave
As a new mom or dad, you are eligible to use two weeks of paid leave immediately following the birth or adoption of your child. This leave is in addition to any other time off.
Family and Medical Leave
You are eligible for up to 12 weeks of paid or unpaid leave every year for childcare, adoption or to care for a family member who is ill.  The District of Columbia provides up to 16 weeks of FMLA.
Other Leaves
Blackboard also provides paid time off in the event of a death in your family, if you are called to serve on a jury, or if you are called to military duty.
Emergency Backup Childcare
If you work in the DC office, Blackboard has contracted with a childcare facility to provide free back-up care when your regular childcare provider is unavailable.
Employee Assistance Program (EAP)/Guidance Resources
You and your family have access to this resource and referral service free of charge. Through this program, you can receive confidential counseling, as well as get assistance with any work/life issues, legal questions, or financial concerns you may have. 
Medical Care FSA
This program allows you to set aside up to $3,000 per year in pretax dollars to pay for your out-of-pocket health, dental, and vision expenses. 
Dependent Care FSA
When you're in need of dependent care, this program is designed to help lessen the financial burden by allowing you to set aside up to $5,000 per year in pretax dollars to help pay the expense.
Parking Reimbursement Plan
You can put aside up to $200 per month of pretax dollars to defer the costs of parking ­ whether you park at Blackboard's offices or park and commute.
Metrocheck Program
You can pay for your METRO rail or bus commuting expenses using up to $105 per month of pretax dollars.
AFLAC Supplemental Insurance
Through this benefit, you may use pretax dollars to purchase supplemental dental insurance, personal accident and cancer protection above and beyond your regular medical and dental coverage.
Discount Program
Through Blackboard's Discount Program, you can take advantage of special discounts which Blackboard has negotiated with local and nationwide vendors.
Emergency Travel Assistance
Whether you are on business or personal travel, you and your family may use this free service if an emergency arises for medical transportation and referrals, multi-lingual 24 hour information services, lost document service, and legal assistance.
Employee Referral Program
You could be eligible for a cash bonus if you refer an employee who is hired by Blackboard.
